Your Back-to-School Survival Guide: Gender-Affirming Edition

Your Back-to-School Survival Guide: Gender-Affirming Edition

The start of a new school year can bring a mix of excitement, nerves, and endless to-do lists. For trans and non-binary students, it can also mean navigating spaces where your identity might not always be fully understood or respected. You deserve to feel safe, affirmed, and confident in the classroom, in the halls, and beyond.

Here is your guide to stepping into the school year prepared, supported, and unapologetically yourself.

1. Prepare Your Gender-Affirming Gear

If you use binders, packers, breast forms, tucking garments, or other affirming gear, check them before school starts to make sure they still fit comfortably and are in good condition.

  • Have a backup option for days when your go-to item is in the wash or not feeling right.

  • Keep a small essentials-kit in your locker or bag that could include spare underwear, tape, or any items you use to feel affirmed.

  • Take regular bathroom breaks when wearing a binder to give your body moments to rest. Do not wear a binder for more than 8 hours a day. A binder with a zipper can make changing or removing it much easier during school.

  • If you tuck, do not keep your tuck for more than 8 hours. Our Humphider is a great option for school because it does not require tape, which means you can easily untuck and take breaks when needed. It is also more practical for peeing compared to tape.

  • Review safe usage guidelines to protect your health and comfort. UNTAG offers free product manuals and guides, including a Chest Binder Guide, Tucking Guide, and Breast Prosthesis Guide.

2. Dress for Comfort and Confidence

Your clothing should make you feel good about yourself and allow you to focus on your day without distraction.

  • Layer up to help with warmth, comfort, and silhouette.

  • Choose fabrics that are breathable and move with you, perfect for long school days.

  • If your school has a dress code, check the rules in advance to know where you can express yourself freely and where you might need to adapt. In some countries, you have the right to dress in a way that aligns with your gender identity.

3. Know Your Rights

School policies vary widely around the world, but you should always know what protections you have.

  • Research policies on names, pronouns, restroom access, and anti-bullying measures.

  • If possible, talk to a trusted teacher, counselor, or diversity coordinator before the school year begins.

  • Check local and international resources:

    • COC Nederland – LGBTQ+ advocacy in the Netherlands (coc.nl)

    • Transgender Europe (TGEU) – European network for trans rights (tgeu.org)

    • GLSEN – US-based resource for LGBTQ+ students (glsen.org)

    • Stonewall – UK-based LGBTQ+ charity (stonewall.org.uk)

4. Create a “Safety and Comfort Kit”

It is empowering to have a few essentials ready for when you need them most.

Ideas to pack, feel free to change it!

  • Deodorant

  • Hygiene products such as pads, tampons, or whatever you use

  • Small mirror

  • Hair ties or clips

  • Band-aids

  • Tissues or wipes

  • A grounding card, small affirmation note, or stress ball for tough moments

5. Build Your Support Network

Having a support system makes all the difference.

  • Seek out LGBTQ+ student groups or start one if your school does not have any.

  • Connect with trusted friends, family, or online communities where you can be your authentic self.

  • Remember that even one supportive ally can be a huge source of strength.

6. Prioritize Self-Care

School can be intense, so do not forget to take care of yourself mentally and physically.

  • Make time for hobbies and activities that recharge you.

  • Use lunch breaks or free periods to step outside, listen to music, or check in with a friend.

  • Stay aware of your mental health and reach out for help when you need it.

You've Got This

Back to school is more than just new notebooks and schedules. It is an opportunity to keep showing up as your true self. You are valid, you are enough, and you belong in every classroom you walk into.
