The history of our binder: how a simple request sparked a movement

At UNTAG, the Short Binder is more than a bestseller. It's where our story began. Behind its minimal design is a personal history full of care, creativity and community.

It started with family

Back in 2004, our founder Danaë was a fashion student when her trans brother asked her for help. He needed a top that would flatten his chest comfortably and effectively, and that simply didn't exist yet. Danaë took on the challenge and used her design background to make something that fit his body and his needs.

After a few test models, the Short Binder was born.

Soon, other men from her brother's support group heard about the custom-made binder and started asking for one too. Danaë realised this was bigger than a one-off project. It showed a real, urgent need in the trans community for compression wear that's safe, affirming and works.

The birth of a brand

The Short Binder was an instant hit in the community. Word spread fast, and Danaë was soon sewing binders for more and more people, all of them grateful to finally have something made with care and understanding.

That growing demand became the foundation of UNTAG, a brand now known for its inclusive and innovative take on gender affirmation. What started as a handmade garment for a sibling grew into a product that supports thousands of people on their own gender journeys.

Designed for real bodies

From day one, the Short Binder stood out because it was designed with the community, not just for it. Traditional binders often covered the whole torso, but Danaë's version was shorter, stretchier and focused on comfort as much as compression. It was practical, breathable and better for everyday wear, especially for people who found longer binders too restrictive or unsafe.

That focus on safety and wearability became a core part of how UNTAG designs. Every product since follows the same idea: affirm, don't restrict, and support and celebrate every body just as it is.

More than a product

Today, the Short Binder is still a key piece in the UNTAG collection, available in different materials and shades. But even more than that, it shows how listening, caring and making things with intention can create real change.

From one sibling's request to an international LGBTQIA+ community, the story of the Short Binder proves that gender-affirming design can be powerful and deeply personal at the same time.
