Behind the Seams: How We Choose Our Fabrics

At UNTAG, every piece of clothing starts with fabric. It’s not only about how something looks, but also how it feels on the skin, how it performs during daily wear, and the impact it has on the world. Choosing the right materials is one of the most important steps in creating our collections.

What We Look For

We search for fabrics that are soft to the touch, durable, and comfortable enough to wear all day. Because many of our garments are compression-based, such as binders and tucking undies, the fabric must also provide the right balance of stretch and firmness. It should move with the body, but also hold its shape and deliver gentle, supportive compression where needed.

Why We Use Mostly Poly Fabrics

Our collections rely heavily on polyamide and other synthetic blends. While natural fibers like cotton or linen are wonderful in some contexts, they don’t always deliver the performance we need. It takes longer for them to dry, which can be a problem when being worn directly on the skin. Cotton, for example, tends to lose elasticity and can become heavy when worn against the skin for long periods. Linen wrinkles easily and doesn’t offer the stretch required for compression. Poly fabrics, on the other hand, are resilient, lightweight, and versatile. They maintain their elasticity, dry quickly, and are especially suitable for garments that need to combine strength, comfort, and durability. Whenever possible, we look for recycled yarns to minimize the environmental impact.

Who Makes It and Where

All of our garment production takes place in Europe, with European fabrics and manufacturers. This allows us to keep supply chains short, ensure fair working conditions, and maintain strict quality standards. Transparency is key: knowing who makes our fabrics and where they come from helps us stay accountable.

Composition and Sustainability

Every fabric we consider is carefully analyzed for its composition. Stretch content is essential for movement and compression, while recycled or upcycled fibers help us reduce waste. When available, we also look for certified fabrics that prove their sustainable origin. Our goal is always to balance performance with responsibility.

Certifications

All of the fabrics we use are OEKO-TEX® certified, which means they are tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. This certification ensures that every material touching your skin is safe, skin-friendly, and produced according to strict international health and environmental standards. It’s an extra layer of reassurance that our fabrics aren’t just comfortable and durable, but also responsible choices for both people and the planet.

Staying Ahead

We also keep an eye on trends, making sure the fabrics we select not only perform well but also feel modern and relevant. Last week, our team visited Première Vision 2025 Paris Fabric Trade, one of the most important fabric fairs in the world. There we explored new innovations, touched and tested dozens of materials, and gathered inspiration for upcoming collections. It’s often at events like this where the future of fashion starts to take shape.

Our Commitment

We’re proud of the fabrics we use today, but we’re committed to doing better each season. That means increasing the use of recycled fabrics, exploring new sustainable options, and always making sure that the clothes we create are soft, strong, and affirming. For us, fabric is the foundation of our mission: to design gender-affirming clothing that feels good, lasts long, and is made responsibly.
