How we make a binder: from idea to your body

How we make a binder: from idea to your body

A binder is never just a piece of clothing. It is comfort, confidence, relief, and freedom of expression. For many people, it is an important part of feeling at home in their body.

That is why we do not believe in fast fashion or mass production without purpose. Every binder we create is developed with care, tested with real people, and produced responsibly in Europe using high-quality fabrics from locally sourced fabrics.

Ever wondered how your binder actually comes to life? Let us take you behind the seams.

Step 1: It starts with the community

We do not create products based on trends or assumptions. Every binder begins with feedback from the people who wear them.

Through emails, customer service conversations, social media, surveys, events, and reviews, we learn what people actually need:

  • More comfort during long wear

  • Better breathability

  • Stronger compression

  • Softer seams

  • Better movement during sports

  • More size inclusivity

  • Safer binding options

That feedback shapes every new development. Because the people wearing our binders are the real experts.

UNTAG actually started with a binder over 20 years ago, when founder Danaë designed one for her trans brother while studying fashion. After several test models, the first Short Binder was born.

Step 2: Designing for comfort and safety

Once we know what needs improving, the design process begins in our studio near Amsterdam.

Creating a binder is a careful balance. It needs to compress effectively while still allowing freedom of movement and everyday comfort.

We spend a lot of time working on:

  • Fabric combinations

  • Compression levels

  • Panel placement

  • Stretch recovery

  • Seam positioning

  • Breathability

  • Fit for different body types

A binder should move with the body, not work against it.

That is why our products go through multiple fitting rounds and adjustments before they are ready.

Step 3: Choosing the right fabrics

Fabric is one of the most important parts of a binder. The wrong fabric can feel restrictive, trap heat, or lose its shape quickly.

We carefully select fabrics that are:

  • Strong and supportive

  • Soft against the skin

  • Breathable

  • Durable

  • Comfortable for longer wear

  • Responsibly sourced

Many of our fabrics come from Belgium and Italy, where we work with trusted suppliers that meet high quality and sustainability standards.

We are also continuously exploring more sustainable materials and increasing the use of recycled fabrics where possible.

Because gender-affirming clothing should not only feel good on your body. It should also be made responsibly.

Step 4: Sampling and testing

Before a binder ever enters production, we create test samples.

These samples are worn, tested, adjusted, and tested again.

We pay close attention to:

  • Compression consistency

  • Comfort during movement

  • Edge finishing

  • Elasticity

  • Long-term wear

  • Shape retention after washing

Some adjustments may seem tiny, but even a few millimeters can completely change how a binder feels on the body.

At UNTAG, fit is never rushed.

Step 5: Responsible European production

Once a design is approved, production starts with our carefully selected European manufacturing partners.

We intentionally keep production closer to home because it allows us to:

  • Maintain quality control

  • Work more transparently

  • Reduce transport distances

  • Build long-term relationships with manufacturers

  • Ensure responsible working conditions

Every binder is produced with attention to detail, from cutting and stitching to finishing and quality control.

Step 6: Quality checks and finishing

Before a binder reaches our warehouse, every piece is checked carefully.

We inspect:

  • Stitching quality

  • Fabric consistency

  • Compression panels

  • Seam finishing

  • Sizing accuracy

  • Overall comfort and construction

Because when someone puts on a binder, they should feel supported immediately, both physically and emotionally.

Step 7: From our studio to your wardrobe

After production, binders arrive at our warehouse, where orders are packed and shipped with care.

But the journey does not stop there.

Once a binder reaches someone’s body, it becomes part of daily life:

  • First days at school or work

  • Going out with confidence

  • Looking in the mirror and feeling more like yourself

  • Moving through the world more comfortably

That is the real reason we do what we do.

More than a binder

At UNTAG, binders are designed to support people, not just shape bodies.

Every stitch, fabric choice, fitting round, and adjustment is part of a bigger goal: helping people feel comfortable, affirmed, and free to express themselves in their own way.

Because everybody deserves to feel at home in their body.
