Growing confidence in your true self

Growing confidence in your true self

Confidence isn't something everyone just has. Most of it gets built, one step at a time. For trans, non-binary and genderfluid people, that often starts with something simple: feeling more at ease in your body, being seen the way you want to be seen, and having people around you who get it. None of that happens overnight, but it doesn't need to. Small steps are enough.

1. Start small

Confidence tends to grow when you give yourself goals you can actually reach. Wear the piece of clothing that makes you feel like you. Use your chosen name somewhere new. Small wins like these add up faster than you'd think, and they're proof of what you're capable of.

2. Recognize your strengths

A lot of us grow up focused on what we're not. Try flipping that around. Maybe you're creative, or a good listener, or the person your friends call first when something goes wrong. Those things are already part of who you are. Naming them helps.

3. Change how you talk to yourself

The way you talk to yourself matters more than you'd expect. If your inner voice keeps saying you don't belong somewhere, that's worth noticing, and worth pushing back on. You're allowed to take up space. You're allowed to still be figuring things out. Give yourself the same patience you'd give a friend.

4. Find your people

Confidence grows faster around people who actually see you. That might be an online community, a queer-friendly gym, or a local meetup. Our People UNTAGGED series is full of real stories from people figuring this out too, worth a read if you want to feel less alone in it.

5. Try something new

New things feel uncomfortable right up until they don't. Speak up in a moment you'd normally stay quiet. Try a haircut you've been thinking about. Go swimming in gender-affirming swimwear instead of sitting it out. Every time you do something unfamiliar, you prove to yourself you can handle it. Planning a trip to the pool? Our guide to binding, taping and packing while swimming is a good place to start.

6. Take care of your body

How you feel in your body affects how confident you feel, full stop. Rest when you need it, eat properly, move in ways that feel good instead of like punishment. For a lot of people, the right gear makes a real difference too, whether that's a binder that actually fits, tucking underwear you can wear all day, or breast forms that give you the shape you're after. Not sure where to start? Our binder quiz helps you figure out what'll actually work for you.

7. Notice how far you've come

Confidence takes time to build, so take a second to look back. Maybe you're using your pronouns more openly now. Maybe you feel a bit braver in public. Maybe you're just kinder to yourself than you were a year ago. That counts. All of it counts.

You don't have to have it all figured out

Confidence isn't about being fearless, and it's definitely not about being perfect. It's trusting yourself a little more each day. For trans, non-binary and genderfluid people, building that trust is its own kind of self-expression. Go at your own pace, lean on the people and tools that help, and give yourself credit for showing up. That's really all it takes.
