Your back-to-school survival guide: gender-affirming edition

A new school year can bring a mix of excitement, nerves and never-ending to-do lists. For trans and non-binary students, it can also mean spending your days in places where your identity isn't always fully understood or respected. You deserve to feel safe, affirmed and confident in the classroom, in the hallways and everywhere else.

Here's your guide to starting the school year prepared, supported and unapologetically yourself.

1. Get your gender-affirming gear ready

Do you use binders, packers, breast prostheses, tucking underwear or other affirming gear? Check them before school starts, so you know they still fit comfortably and are in good shape.

  • Have a backup for days when your go-to item is in the wash or just doesn't feel right.

  • Keep a small essentials kit in your locker or bag, with things like spare underwear, tape or anything else that helps you feel affirmed.

  • Take regular bathroom breaks when you're wearing a binder, so your body gets a moment to rest. Don't wear a binder for more than 8 hours a day. A binder with a zip makes changing or taking it off at school a lot easier.

  • If you tuck, don't stay tucked for more than 8 hours. Our Humphider is a great option for school because you don't need tape, so you can easily untuck and take breaks when you need to. It's also more practical than tape when you need to pee.

  • Read up on how to use your gear safely, for your health and comfort. UNTAG has free product manuals and guides, including a Chest Binder Guide, Tucking Guide and Breast Prosthesis Guide.

2. Dress for comfort and confidence

Your clothes should make you feel good about yourself and let you focus on your day without distractions.

  • Layer up for warmth, comfort and the silhouette you want.

  • Pick breathable fabrics that move with you, perfect for long school days.

  • Does your school have a dress code? Check the rules beforehand, so you know where you can express yourself freely and where you might need to adapt. In some countries, you have the right to dress in a way that matches your gender identity.

3. Know your rights

School policies are very different around the world, but you should always know what protection you have.

  • Look up the rules on names, pronouns, toilet access and bullying.

  • If you can, talk to a teacher, counsellor or diversity coordinator you trust before the school year starts.

  • Check local and international resources:

    • COC Nederland: LGBTQ+ advocacy in the Netherlands (coc.nl)

    • Transgender Europe (TGEU): European network for trans rights (tgeu.org)

    • GLSEN: US-based resource for LGBTQ+ students (glsen.org)

    • Stonewall: UK-based LGBTQ+ charity (stonewall.org.uk)

4. Pack a "safety and comfort kit"

It feels good to have a few essentials ready for when you need them most.

Some ideas to pack (switch it up however you like!):

  • Deodorant

  • Period products like pads, tampons or whatever you use

  • A small mirror

  • Hair ties or clips

  • Plasters

  • Tissues or wipes

  • A grounding card, a little affirmation note or a stress ball for tough moments

5. Build your support network

Having people in your corner makes all the difference.

  • Look for LGBTQ+ student groups, or start one if your school doesn't have one yet.

  • Connect with friends, family or online communities you trust, where you can be your true self.

  • Remember: even one supportive ally can be a huge source of strength.

6. Make self-care a priority

School can be a lot, so don't forget to look after your mind and body.

  • Make time for hobbies and things that recharge you.

  • Use lunch breaks or free periods to get some fresh air, listen to music or check in with a friend.

  • Keep an eye on your mental health and reach out for help when you need it.

You've got this

Back to school is about more than new notebooks and timetables. It's another chance to keep showing up as your true self. You are valid, you are enough and you belong in every classroom you walk into.
