The beach should be a place for joy, sunshine, and saltwater – not anxiety. But for many trans masc and trans femme people, heading to the beach can bring up worries about body dysphoria, safety, and swimwear. Whether you're planning a vacation or just hoping to enjoy a sunny day by the sea, here are some practical tips to help you feel more prepared, confident, and affirmed.
At UNTAG, we offer swimwear that’s designed for movement, comfort, and gender-affirming joy – for all bodies. Read on for tips, tricks, and product suggestions.
For Trans Masc Folks
1. Choose the right swimwear
A good swimsuit can make all the difference. Many trans masc people prefer swim tops or rash guards combined with board shorts or swim trunks. If you want chest compression, opt for a swim binder – specially designed to be safe for water use and movement. We offer swim binders and swimsuits that dry quickly and allow freedom of movement, unlike regular binders that can become heavy and restrictive when wet.
2. Packing options for swimming
Our packing swim bottoms are made with soft, water-friendly fabric and a secure pouch for packers. They’re built to move with you and dry quickly. A lot of our regular packing bottoms and foam/silicone packers can also be used for swimming. Choose between foam packers for lightweight comfort or a silicone packer for a more realistic feel.
3. Add a t-shirt if you need it
If you’re uncomfortable swimming in only a binder, a simple t-shirt or rash guard is your best friend. It adds coverage, helps you feel less exposed, and can also provide extra sun protection.
4. Don’t forget the basics
Wet binders and swim gear can become uncomfortable fast. Pack a dry change of clothes, reapply sunscreen regularly, and drink lots of water. If you’re binding, give your body breaks – especially on hot days.
For Trans Femme Folks
1. Affirming swimwear made for you
You deserve swimwear that fits and flatters. Our trans femme swimwear collection includes one-piece bathing suits, tucking bikini bottoms, and special swim tops with pockets for breast prosthetics. They’re made to support your shape and keep everything in place, whether you’re swimming or relaxing.
2. Safe and stylish tucking
Tucking at the beach? Many of our tucking bottoms are made for swimming. Our regular tucking underwear can also be worn in the water. We do have a special swimming collection for MtF. For reliable support, our ruffle bikini set is a favorite – cute, functional, and affirming.
3. Breast forms that swim with you
Our silicone and foam breast prosthetics are water-safe and suitable for swimming. Just make sure they’re secured in a pocketed swim top or suit. They help create a natural shape and stay in place even in the water.
4. Cover-ups and comfort
A flowing sarong, cover-up, or mesh dress can offer a little more privacy when you need it. It’s also great for sun protection and makes transitions to and from the water feel easier.
General Tips for All Trans & Non-Binary Folks
1. Choose your location
If possible, go to a beach or pool known to be LGBTQ+ friendly or clothing-optional if that makes you feel safer. Going with a supportive friend or group can help ease nerves.
2. Bring your beach kit
Pack a small bag with essentials like a towel, dry clothes, sunscreen, water, a small mirror, wet wipes, and anything else that helps you feel prepared. Little things can go a long way in boosting your comfort and confidence.
3. Wear what makes you feel good
There’s no right or wrong way to dress at the beach. Whether that means compression swimwear, a bikini with prosthetics, or a big t-shirt and shorts – your comfort and safety come first.
4. Joy is resistance
You deserve to enjoy your time in the sun, in the water, and with yourself. The beach isn’t about how you look – it’s about how you feel. So take up space, laugh loudly, and let yourself feel joy in your body.
At UNTAG, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated – on the beach and beyond. From swim binders and packing swimwear to transfemme bikini sets and prosthetics that work in the water, we’ve got you covered.
