The History of Our Binder: How a Simple Request Sparked a Movement

The History of Our Binder: How a Simple Request Sparked a Movement

At UNTAG, the short binder isn’t just a bestselling product — it’s where our story began. Behind its minimalist design lies a deep, personal history rooted in care, creativity, and community.

It Started with Family

Back in 2004, our founder Danaë was a fashion student when her trans brother asked for help. He needed a top that would comfortably and effectively flatten his chest — something that didn’t exist on the market at the time. Danaë accepted the challenge, drawing on her design background to create a solution tailored to his body and needs.

After a few test models, the Short Binder was born.

Soon, other men from her brother’s support group heard about the custom-made binder and began reaching out with the same request. Danaë realized this wasn’t just a one-off project — it revealed a larger, urgent need within the transgender community for safe, affirming, and functional compression wear.

The Birth of a Brand

The Short Binder became an instant hit within the community. Word spread fast, and Danaë found herself sewing binders for more and more people — each one grateful to finally have access to something made with care and understanding.

This growing demand laid the foundation for UNTAG, a brand now known for its inclusive and innovative approach to gender affirmation. What started as a handmade garment for a sibling transformed into a product that supports thousands of people navigating their own gender journeys.

Designed for Real Bodies

From the start, the Short Binder stood out because it was designed with the community, not just for it. Unlike traditional binders that often covered the full torso, Danaë’s version was shorter, more elastic, and focused on comfort as much as compression. It was practical, breathable, and better suited to everyday wear — especially for people who found longer binders restrictive or unsafe.

This attention to safety and wearability became a core value in UNTAG’s design process. Every product since then has followed that same ethos: to affirm, not restrict; to support and to celebrate every body just as it is.

More Than Just a Product

Today, the Short Binder remains a cornerstone of the UNTAG collection, available in various materials and shades. But more importantly, it stands as a symbol of how listening, caring, and crafting with intention can spark meaningful change.

From one sibling’s request to an international community of LGBTQIA+, the story of the Short Binder is proof that gender-affirming design can be both powerful and deeply personal.
