Purple Friday: what is it and how can you participate?

What is Purple Friday?

Purple Friday is an annual day in the Netherlands where students draw attention to diversity and inclusivity, with a special focus on the LGBTQIA+ community. By wearing purple clothing on this day, people show their solidarity with LGBTQIA+ youth and their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment, both at school and beyond.

The Origin of Purple Friday

Purple Friday has its roots in the American "Spirit Day," an initiative launched in 2010 by a Canadian student named Brittany McMillan. Spirit Day was designed as a moment to show support for LGBTQIA+ youth and protest against bullying and discrimination. In the Netherlands, the concept of Purple Friday was adopted in 2010 and organized by the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) network, supported by COC Netherlands. Since then, it has grown into a widely recognized event in schools across the country.

What Does Purple Friday Represent?

Purple Friday is about acceptance, visibility, and awareness. The goal is to demonstrate that everyone should be able to be themselves, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or expression. Wearing the color purple symbolizes this support, and many schools organize activities such as lectures, workshops, and film screenings to encourage discussions about diversity and inclusion.

Why is Purple Friday Important?

For many LGBTQIA+ youth, school can be a time of uncertainty or insecurity due to their identity. Research shows that this group is more likely to experience bullying, exclusion, and mental health issues. Purple Friday offers an opportunity to address these topics and make a statement against discrimination. It contributes to a cultural shift where acceptance and inclusion become the norm.

How Can You Participate?

Participating in Purple Friday is simple:

  1. Wear purple: Put on something purple to show your solidarity.

  2. Organize activities: Host a themed event, movie screening, or invite a guest speaker.

  3. Talk about it: Use this day to have conversations about diversity and inclusion.

  4. Share on social media: Use hashtags like #PurpleFriday to raise awareness and inspire others to join.

Make a difference!

Purple Friday is more than a symbolic day; it is a powerful tool to create awareness and show support for LGBTQIA+ youth. By providing a safe environment where everyone can be themselves, we work together toward a more inclusive society. Whether you are a student, teacher, or parent, your participation can make a difference.
