What gave you the idea to create the Short Binder?
"21 years ago, I was studying fashion, and my trans brother asked if I could make a top that would effectively and comfortably hide his chest. After a few test models, the Short Binder was born. Soon after, other men from my brother’s support group approached me with the same request. It quickly became clear that there was a significant need for such a product."
The Short Binder became an instant hit within the transgender community and laid the foundation for UNTAG, a brand now known for its inclusive and innovative approach to gender affirmation.
How did you start developing this product?
"The challenge was—and still is—to create a top that’s tight enough to flatten but comfortable enough to wear daily. The tighter it is, the flatter it becomes, but it also needs to allow freedom of movement without feeling 'restricted.'"
From the very first version, comfort was key, and this focus is still evident in UNTAG’s products. Combining a perfect fit with high-quality materials remains one of the brand’s core values.
How did it feel to hold the finished product for the first time?
"Honestly, it didn’t feel all that special," Danaë admits. "At the time, I didn’t realize how many people were waiting for something like this. I was happy that my brother was helped, and that was enough for me."
It was only later that Danaë realized how life-changing the Short Binder was for the community. It became more than just a garment—it became a symbol of self-acceptance and empowerment.
What makes the Short Binder different from other binders?
"The material and the evolved fit. We use fabrics that are not only effective but also comfortable and durable. Over time, the fit has been optimized to suit as many people as possible."
At UNTAG, we believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own body. The Short Binder is designed with that mission in mind, making it a truly unique product.
How has the design changed over the years?
"The core design is essentially the same as the first version I made," says Danaë. "But over the years, we’ve made small adjustments to improve comfort and versatility."
In the early years, Danaë worked on a made-to-measure basis. "If something didn’t fit properly, like under the arms or around the rib cage, I would personally adjust it for the customer. That’s how the choice between the standard and extra-strong variants came about, depending on individual needs."
How has making the Short Binder changed your perspective on gender affirmation?
"It has significantly broadened my worldview. Over the years, I’ve met so many different people with diverse backgrounds and gender identities. When I made the first binder, I had no idea what an impact this product would have on people’s lives."
Creating the Short Binder not only gave Danaë a deeper understanding of gender diversity but also inspired her to grow UNTAG into a brand that supports people worldwide.
What inspired you to turn this into a business?
"It kind of just happened," Danaë laughs. "I made that first binder for my brother, and soon 10 other trans men asked for one. They told others about it, and it became clear that I needed to approach this professionally."
What started as a handmade product for a family member grew into an international brand making gender-affirming products accessible to everyone.
What do you hope people feel when they wear the Short Binder?
"I hope they look in the mirror and see the person they feel they are inside."
This simple yet powerful goal is at the heart of everything UNTAG does. Every product is designed to offer comfort, confidence, and freedom to those who wear it.

The Short Binder is more than just a garment—it’s a symbol of UNTAG’s journey and the lives it has touched along the way. From the first test models to the extensive product range available today, UNTAG remains committed to inclusivity and innovation.
